Freelance Front-End Developer

The Mellon Foundation's communications team is a growing internal group of design, digital, media, and content makers and experts who are responsible for building and stewarding the Foundation identity and to tell its story, driving outreach, and engagement efforts both internally and externally. Our team's work strives to:

  • Encourage appreciation, understanding of, and engagement with the work of our grantees
  • Advocate for the centrality of the arts and humanities in culture

The Opportunity

The Mellon Foundation seeks a Freelance Front-End developer to support a range of digital projects that bring Mellon's mission to life in new and exciting ways. These projects include website updates and new build, email template creation, interactive graphics, and more. We're looking for a creative thinker and expert in user interface with a strong portfolio of work across web and mobile that demonstrates responsive design that is also pixel perfect.

This is a temporary, freelance role with 15-20 hours per week. Desired start date: January 10, 2022.

Required skills:

  • Ability to design, code, test, publish, and maintain web sites according to project specifications and group standards;
  • Comfort in developing for and within major (and legacy) Content Management Systems and email marketing platforms;
  • A user-centered approach and thorough understanding of responsive design, cross-platform coding, and browser compatibility;
  • Prioritizes ADA compliance in development; conversant in ADA requirements;
  • Experience optimizing existing web pages and in building anew working from wireframes;
  • Collaborative practice to work closely with creative teams: design, content, and brand strategy with a strong appreciation for interaction and visual design and a drive to produce innovative interactive experiences;
  • Proficient with XHTML, javascript, Actionscript and CSS, etc., and maintaining cross-platform and browser presentation;
  • Comfortable discussing site flows and wireframes;
  • Expertise to provide counsel regarding given project's technical feasibility;
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; and
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary best practices in digital design and development.

Candidates must provide a portfolio of work samples that demonstrate skills required.

Compensation

Pay range for this role is commensurate with experience. Please provide an hourly rate with your application.

Location

This is a remote position with occasional opportunities for in-person meetings. Preference for candidates who are located in the New York City Greater Metro region. A personal desktop computer or laptop and reliable internet connection are required for remote work.

Hours

15-20 hours per week with potential for additional hours and/or full-time employment.
