The Telecommunications Network Planner is responsible for designing, planning and optimisation of NBN and private network infrastructure to deliver high-quality broadband services to residential, business, and government customers. The role involves working with fibre optic, copper, and fixed wireless technologies, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards while providing excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, design, and optimise telecommunications networks (fixed, fibre, wireless, IP, or hybrid environments) Develop network architecture designs, capacity models, and growth forecasts.
- Produce and review high-level and low-level network designs, including diagrams and technical documentation
- Diagnose and resolve network faults by conducting continuity, attenuation, and optical power tests to ensure compliance with NBN standards and SLAs.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and optimisation activities to improve reliability and minimise service downtime.
- Support NBN technology upgrades and infrastructure expansions, including copper-to-fibre migrations, new estate builds, and business connections.
- Maintain logs of parts, equipment, and field activities, and prepare detailed reports for management and NBN service coordinators.
- Liaise with suppliers, service providers, and contractors to coordinate works and monitor service delivery.
- Provide technical advice and clear communication to customers on service issues, resolution steps, and usage guidance.
- Collaborate with engineers and team members to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant service delivery in line with regulatory requirements.
- Occasionally install, configure, maintain, and repair copper, fibre optic, and wireless NBN networks for residential and business clients.
Qualifications:
- Relevant Diploma or higher
- Proven experience in network planning, design, or engineering within a telecommunications environment
- Strong understanding of engineering principles and technical processes
- Strong understanding of telecommunications infrastructure and data network fundamentals.
- Experience in fibre splicing, copper jointing, and coaxial cabling.
- Strong understanding of IP networking, routing, switching, and transmission technologies.
- Familiarity with OTDR, power meters, TDR, and other testing equipment.
- Knowledge of NBN access technologies (FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, HFC, Fixed Wireless, Satellite).
- Ability to read and interpret network designs, maps, and work orders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills, customer service focus skills and the ability to work well within a team
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD software and engineering tools
- Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
Additional Qualifications & Certifications
- ACMA Open Cabling License (with Structured and Fibre endorsements).
- White Card (Construction Safety).
- Working at Heights certification.
- Confined Spaces certification (desirable).
- Police Clearance (once successful).
- Current driver’s license.
- Implement Traffic Management Plan
